Back in 1992, Dow Smith started his company with a little truck and a big dream.
“I was working out of a red Chevy S-10,” Dow remembers. “That was my office and my sole piece of equipment.”
This month, as Dow Smith Company celebrates 32 years in business, we’re thinking back to the beginning.
Dow’s first project was the renovation of Building 661 at the Smyrna Airport. It was a job he took for the late Colonel Steve Fitzhugh and current Executive Director John Black.
After he completed that job, Dow decided to upgrade his office from the pickup truck to the building he’d just renovated.
Dow set out to make a name for himself and his company in Middle Tennessee. In 1996, he built the Smyrna Bowling Center. In 1997, he did an addition on the Smyrna Post Office. In 1998, he built the Murfreesboro Post Office on Memorial Drive.
Today, many memorable projects later, Dow serves as the Visionary of the company, offering insight, strategic thinking, and a big-picture view of our future. Joey Rhyne, who joined Dow Smith Company in 2004, serves as Chief Executive Officer and oversees Preconstruction Services, and is responsible for customer relationships and retention. Shauna McConnell, who joined Dow Smith Company in 2012, serves as Chief Financial Officer and manages all aspects of our financials, administrative tasks, and human resources. Trey King, who joined Dow Smith Company in 2017, serves as Chief Operations Officer and works with superintendents, project managers, and subcontractors.
Dow Smith Company now employs 35 people and has worked with hundreds of businesses and organizations in the Middle Tennessee area.
